Place your 1rst finger on the 5th fret 6th string. This will be the note A. Pick the string with your pick to sound out the note, then pick the open A to tune it. Adjust the tuning peg that is at the top of the neck of the guitar and tune it. Make it sound like the A note on the 5th fret 6th string.

Don't forget to tune the lower and higher E notes. 6th string is the lower E, verses the (1) first string is the higher E in pitch.
